Chapter 19

Take Me To Church

I stumbled into the entryway of Zepar’s house when we reappeared from the crushing, dark nothingness. Vepar let me drop to my knees as he let out a frustrated, booming shout that vibrated the walls and shook the door behind us.

On weak ankles, I got to my feet and leaned against the closest wall. Vepar paced the floor with his hands at his sides. I watched him closely, unsure if the haze I was seeing loom over his face and body was the liquor or the loss of his cool causing him to slip into a new form I hadn’t seen before.

Moments later, Zepar appeared, his brow knitted together and his shoulders tense. He raised his hand and pinched the bridge of his nose, wrinkling his darkened features. They both looked haggard, as if the interactions at The Deacon had been a battle and not a pissing contest.

“That insolent bastard!” Vepar stomped off in the direction of the kitchen, leaving Zepar and me in his vengeful wake.

“Are you all right?” Zepar said in an unnaturally calm voice.

“Yeah. I’m fine.”

I wrapped my arms around my body and waited for the uneasy quaking in my knees to stop. I eyed the staircase and thought about kicking my heels off and escaping up them. I looked down to my feet and remembered the massive precious stone I was clutching in my fist. I opened my hand and gazed down at it, gawking at the sheer size.

There had been a shot of fire up my arm when Sitri had kissed my hand. My stomach had done a full flip at the feel of his lips on my knuckle. More terrifying than that, I’d heard the misty, far off voice in my head whisper…something.

Princeps meus est.

It had been a low hum at first then grew to assault my ears when our skin touched. I couldn’t explain it, but part of me knew he had heard it too.

The mass of Zepar’s body loomed over me. I hadn’t noticed him move across the room, but I felt like I’d lost myself each time I had looked into the garnet’s depths. A thrum of something primal pulsed through my abdomen when it glinted in the light. Like something inside was waiting for me to invite it out into the world. The thought of something inherently evil staring back up at me sent a shock through my system.

Zepar’s hand moved over the gem and brought my attention up to his face, a kind and pitiful look in his eye. The moment we had shared before leaving flashed before me, his hands gripping my waist and his hard cock pinning me against the wall. The flames of his gaze in my memory set my cheeks on fire once again.

I shook my head and took a small step back. I placed a hand over his, sandwiching his hand in mine, then turned to transfer the necklace to his palm.

“I won’t be needing that,” I said, my voice strained from the sting of the vodka and having to shout over the loud music.
